REVELLERS braved the rain at Gwent's very own Glastonbury as thousands marked the 16th annual Blaenavon World Heritage Day on Saturday.

Popular local band the ReVamps were a big hit on the music stage while the Blaenavon Heritage School choir, folk dancers Dawnswyr Blaenafon and the Blaenavon Male Voice Choir also entertained the crowds.

Elsewhere in the town, children tried their hand at zorbing and flocked to the fairground rides and a petting zoo set up by Greenmeadow Community Farm.

Local traders selling everything from jams to handcrafted items were also there on the day, with a range of special offers.

Even when the rain began to pour, at around 12pm, revellers made use of the chapels scattered around the town, which had various heritage day activates going on.

Thankfully, the dark clouds had cleared by the time the main event, the heritage costume parade, set off from the top of Broad Street at lpm.

Celebrating the theme of Blaenavon past and present, Blaenavon Town Band led this year’s parade which featured a number of sports teams, including Blaenavon Blues.

Chair of the World Heritage Day committee, Gareth Davies, said: “As always, World Heritage Day is a great day out for the whole family.

“We have a wide variety of music, dance and entertainment, and plenty of rides and stalls to give everyone something to enjoy, and of course the heritage costume parade, which is always the highlight of the day.”
