A NEWPORT teenager has launched a new social media campaign to promote the positives of the city’s nightlife.

Callum Hiscott, from Caerleon, was inspired to create the Newport At Night Twitter page following the success of the Hats off to Newport campaign earlier this year.

The Caerleon Comprehensive student wants budding photographers to use their phones to capture the beauty of the city at night, and then share it on Twitter.

The 17-year-old said: “There’s people in Newport, especially youngsters, who have got an interest in improving the city.

“Friars Walk isn’t just a 9am-8pm thing – Newport is alive at night.

“People forget about Belle Vue Park, the Royal Gwent Hospital being lit up at night and the Transporter Bridge, which is one of the only [transporter] bridges in the world.”

It coincides with fellow city resident Siobhan Carroll, setting up the #BeautifulNewportWales hashtag on Instagram, which also hopes to promote the good points of Newport.

Callum hopes to have the most striking photographs blown up onto canvases and placed in various locations across the city after they are judged by a panel of professional photographers.

Every photo tweeted to the @Newport_AtNight Twitter page will be added to a rolling gallery online, with credit given to each photographer.

Callum says the plan is then for a selection of photos to be framed and sold on, with a percentage going to the photographer.

He said: “I think it’s the perfect time of the year because we’ve got really long evenings at the moment. People will be encouraged to get out, walk the dog and take a picture of the dog in a field.

“I just want people to take pictures on their phone and share it immediately on Twitter, rather than taking it on their camera and spend all day editing it on their computer.”
