A NEWPORT primary school is appealing for people to join in in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the amount of deely boppers worn in one location.

Members of the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) at High Cross Primary school in Rogerstone have organised the event for pupils and community members.

Chairman of the PTA Michelle Draper said after looking on the Guinness World Record’s website she saw the deely bopper world record and thought it would be an interesting challenge.

The event was originally going to be held on the day of the school’s summer fair on Saturday July 2, but Ms Draper moved it to this Friday in a bid to encourage more participants.

She said: “We are always looking for things to do for our summer fair and wanted to do something a little bit different and for the children this is something fantastic.

“All the children and school staff and parents will be taking part with us, but we still need more people to take part.

“We want people to come and help us break the record, which at the moment is 465 people wearing them [deely boppers] in one place.

“Just anybody who would like to take part can come to school for 3pm.”

The PTA have ordered 500 deely boppers, also known as head boppers, for participants, but are hoping more people will take part and are urging them to bring their own head gear.

“It’s a first come first serve basis, and the children will get first priority as the event is at school," she added.

“However, if people could bring their own head boppers just in case we get a lot of people then that would be great.”

Each participant in the event is asked to bring along £1 to donate to the PTA, and the money will go into various school projects.
