EXCITEMENT is building ahead of the opening of Newport’s Euro 2016 fanzone tomorrow.

We can reveal that three big LED screens – one 20 metres wide and two 13 metres wide - are being set up for fans intending to watch their Welsh heroes take on Belgium in what will undoubtedly be the biggest night in modern Welsh football history.

Preparations have been taking place all day today to set up the Rodney Parade family friendly fan area - which will open its gates at 4pm ahead of kick off at 8pm.

To mark the occasion, the Argus is carrying a special eight-page pull-out in tomorrow's edition, with the latest news and interviews from the Wales camp, along with insight from Andrew Penman, our man in France.

The Argus’ vintage van will also be on site at the fanzone, selling extra copies of tomorrow's edition.

Newport Live is working with Newport City Council and Rodney Parade to put on the event, with the Football Association of Wales and Newport Live Sports Development both running free sports activities for all ages, from 4pm to 7pm.

A Guinness-branded beer tent was put up today, while Sony arrived with the first of the big screens at the zone, which will have a capacity of 5,000.

There will also be a Carling bar and others, which will be priced at usual Rodney Parade prices. Organisers dismissed rumours drinks would cost £5 each.

Presenter Mark Powell from Nation Radio will MC the event from 5pm.

Newport belatedly embraced the concept of a fan zone this week after the Argus led calls to set one up on Monday.

Soon after Newport Bus announced it was getting behind Wales’ bid to make it to the semi-finals by making all of its buses free to travel on – from 3pm until the last service – for those with a fan zone ticket.

Tickets cost £3 for adults and are free for under 12s. They are available from the Newport Centre, the Riverfront Theatre on 01633 656757 or at www.newportlive.co.uk until 2pm tomorrow.

Any leftover tickets which have not been sold in advance will be available at Newport County sales office at Rodney Parade from 4pm.

A spokeswoman for Newport Live, which is a charitable trust, responded to some negativity about charging for the fan zone.

She said the decision to charge for the event was to help fund the security, stewarding, toilet hire, PA, screens, St John Ambulance and ticketing.

She also said ticketing means fans will not be disappointed by being turned away because the zone is full up.

“Fanzones offer a fantastic environment to replicate the atmosphere and excitement you'd get from the stadium, so we're looking forward to welcoming the local community and their singing voices," she added.

A fan zone has also again been set up in Caldicot Castle. Tickets, which have sold out, were also priced at £3 each.

Councillor Bob Greenland, cabinet member with responsibility for leisure at Monmouthshire council, said: “Once again, we’re delighted to host a Euro Championship Fan Zone in Caldicot Castle so that local families can cheer on the Welsh football team against Belgium this Friday evening.

“Tickets for this event sold out in under twelve hours.

“The atmosphere has been marvellous and it has been wonderful to see whole families enjoying themselves.

“We wish Wales the best of luck and if they are successful we will look to promote further fan zones for the semi-final and hopefully, the final.”

Chepstow Racecourse had planned to hold a fanzone too, but this will not now go ahead.

The South Wales Argus will be running a live blog from 5pm tomorrow.
