UPDATE Tuesday, July 5:

Newport City Council said Caerleon Road will be closed for a few days while repairs take place.

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water have repaired the leaking pipes, and householders should have their supplies back.

A highways inspector from Newport City Council visited the site yesterday to assess the damage to the carriageway underneath the railway tunnel which was dug up to complete the repair.

Subsequently, some kerbs and the carriageway will have to be replaced. A diversion is in place which is signposted for drivers. Pedestrians can still use the pavement.

"I had thankfully left early for work but the pressure had started to drop.

"It was more a problem for my partner who had just got back last night from a camping weekend and desperately needed a shower before heading to work."

Welsh Water hope water supplies should return to normal by early afternoon. They have been using emergency water tanks and now the majority of homes and businesses have water.

In a statement they said: "We received reports of a water leak in Newport during the early hours of Monday morning.

"Our team have been on site through the night and are working to repair the water main.

"To ensure disruption to the local water supply is kept to a minimum, we have been using tankering to keep supplies in the network, meaning that the majority of homes and businesses in the area have water.

"Some customers may be experiencing low pressure while we work to repair the main, but we expect supplies to be returning to normal early this afternoon.

"We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused and thank them for bearing with us."
