THIS was the scene after a driver left behind a trail of destruction after crashing his car into a garden in Newport on Monday.

A gold BMW shattered a wall and fence at New Street in Pill at around 10.10am, and both will now have to be rebuilt.

Pill councillor Ibrahim Hayat was in the area at the time as part of a community clean-up and asked to borrow a saw from the homeowner, when the incident occurred.

The woman was in her garden as the car came through the back of the fence, with cllr Hayat saying the "almighty crash" had left her "in pieces".

“The ferocity it hit the wall – it smashed the wall and the actual tyre smashed off the chassis and came off. It was horrific, the sound," he said.

“It was a huge smash – we were absolutely shocked by it. To have something like this coming down a small street like New Street is quite frightening for the residents there.

“It was a big thing to happen in our community at this speed and thankfully there were no children in the area at the time.”

One of the woman's neighbours, 57, from the nearby Courtybella Gardens, said: “They look after their garden and had just finished a new rockery. All that is wrecked now.

“If it happened and the wall wasn’t as strong, the BMW would be in the back of the flat. You could see that the head light was hanging out and the wing mirror was in the back garden.

“They drive like lunatics round here and many drive on motorbikes, driving onto the road and into the park.”

An eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, added: "The woman who lives in the flat was in the garden at the time, but luckily wasn't hurt, but very shocked."

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police revealed there were two people in the car when the crash happened but by the time officers arrived, the vehicle was empty.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify the persons involved.
