SORRY to hear that another Labour stalwart of Newport Council has passed on, Ted Travers. He served Pill for many years and was well-known for his large size and local knowledge.
I knew him when he was chairman of the planning committee and he would always contribute effectively in debates, particularly when the Pill Redevelopment was being carried out.
He was renowned for his many stories about the old days in Pill and I remember the one about hanging on the cradle of The Transporter Bridge, dropping off half way across the Usk and swimming back.
Indeed he was a great sportsman in his younger days: swimming and one of Pill’s best baseball players.
For his tireless community service he was Mayor in 1994 and carried out his duties with skill and compassion.
A sad loss for Newport and a councillor who will be remembered for many years.
