A FORMER Newport Sainsbury's store was deliberately set on fire last night.

Crews rushed from all over Gwent to put out the fire, at the derelict supermarket on Shaftesbury Street.

The roof was "well alight" when firefighters arrived at the scene in the early hours of this morning, the fire service said.

The 999 call came in at 1.36am and crews from Malpas and Maindee arrived first.

Firefighters quickly asked for three more fire engines - which were sent from Duffryn, Cwmbran and New Inn - and fought the fire for more than two hours.

Cardiff Central fire station sent an aerial ladder and a water bowser came from Aberbargoed to put out the fire.

Jennie Griffiths, head of South Wales fire and rescue control, said the fire involved a refrigeration area and "breached through the roof into the main building".

She said: "The fire was determined as deliberately set on fire".

Crews left the site at 4.20am and will return at 8.30am to reinspect the building.

The site is derelict and derelict and surrounded by litter and rubbish which has been left there.
