"We don't get to see them very often. It's something nice and different and I want to see how long it is.

"It's a little bit disappointing that it's late, but we are going to wait until it comes. We have been on a steam train before, it was a couple of years before and I really liked it."

NETWORK Rail has confirmed that both lines through Cardiff Central have re-opened.

However, delays are likely to be in effect until around 6pm this evening.

Our reporter at Newport railway station, Estel Farell-Roig, has confirmed that the train has not yet arrived.

UPDATE: 3.03pm

THE steam locomotive is due to arrive in Newport at 3.15pm, following a 65 minute delay.

The Bulleid Light Pacific is on its way to Gwent, first arriving in Chepstow, after remaining in Gloucester.

While part of the delay was due to the accident at Cardiff Central, the train will be pulled by a diesel, adding to its belated arrival in Newport.

UPDATE: 2.39pm

ANXIOUS passengers are waiting at Newport railway station for the arrival of the steam locomotive, which has been delayed following an accident near Cardiff.

At 12.30pm, a man was hit by a train at Cardiff Central, leading to closure of the main line in both directions.

The Bulleid Light Pacific was due to arrive in Newport at 2.09pm, but the train remains at Gloucester as work continues to re-open the lines.

Tom Fife, 19, a former student from Malpas Road, said: "I'm very disappointed. I was really looking forward to the whole experience. 

"I really love trains and it's the first time I've come to see a steam train. We are not in a rush though so we will wait for a while."

The train will pass through Newport on its way to Cardiff

Peter Wright, 67, a retiree from Cross Keys, is at the station with his wife and two children.

"We have had to pay £8 for the long stay car park so it would be really disappointing if we don't see it. This was a special trip to see the steam train. 

"Both of our children are very keen on trains so we really hope it will come. The children were really looking forward to seeing all the steam and hearing the whistle."

PASSENGERS affected by the delays on the railway are able to take the X30 and 30 services between Cardiff and Newport, with services accepting railway tickets on those routes.

THE arrival of asteam locomotive, a Bulleid Light Pacific, in Newport has been delayed after a man was hit by a train close to Cardiff Central Station.

The train was due to first arrive in Chepstow, before heading along the line to Newport and eventually Cardiff.

However, the train remains at Gloucester as work continues to clear the line following the accident.

A spokeswoman from Network Wales has confirmed that work is ongoing to clear the backlog on the main line.

Updates to the trains arrival will be posted online when available.

UPDATE: 1.39pm

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at about 12.30pm to reports that a man had been hit by a train at Cardiff Central railway station.

“A rapid response vehicle, an emergency ambulance and members of the Special Operations Response Team are currently attending the scene.”

A spokeswoman from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service added that a casualty was rescued from the underside of a train at 12.34pm.

The man has suffered injuries to his leg and has been taken to hospital.

RAIL services between Newport and Cardiff have been put on hold after a train hit a man close to Cardiff Central Station.

Emergency personnel from the Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Welsh Ambulance Service have responded to the incident.

Services in both directions have been affected as a result of the incident.

A spokesman from the British Transport Police (BTP) said: “We’ve been called to Cardiff Central station after reports of a person being struck by a train.

"BTP are in attendance alongside local ambulance and fire and rescue personnel. A man is currently being treated for injuries at the scene and will be shortly taken to hospital.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious."

A spokeswoman from Network Rail said that at 12.30pm, trains had been put on stop, affecting platforms two, three and four at Cardiff.

All main line services east and west have been put on hold as a result, she added.
