HEAD teacher and cancer survivor Jon Wilson along with five members of his teaching staff have raised £17,000 for charity after cycling from London to Paris.

The team from Duffryn High School, soon to be John Frost High School, set off on the 261-mile adventure nine days ago to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, covering 50 to 70 miles a day.

They originally aimed to raise £10,000 for the charity, but have had a whopping amount of donations pushing their total to £17,000.

Head teacher Jon Wilson said although the ride was tiring, it was worth it to raise so much for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

“It all went very well and all of us made it through to the end," he said.

“We are recovering with tired legs at the moment.

“We don’t hand the cheque over until later this year so we’re hoping to donations will keep coming.”

Mr Wilson was joined on the ride by his colleagues Andrew Laity, James Rees, Rob Gregory, Richard Gauregui and David Perkins.

The team had raised £16,000 before even setting off on their journey.

“We got up to lots of adventures on the trip,” said Mr Wilson.

“One of our riders had an issue with his bike and actually ended up having to finish the race on a borrowed one, but at least he made it.”

Mr Wilson added the Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity close to his heart after he was treated for Lymphoma around nine years ago.

“The work that Teenage Cancer Trust is fantastic and they are doing a relaunch later this year, which I’ll be attending," he added.

“It feels great to be able to have raised so much money for them.”

The team’s JustGiving page is still open until later this year.
