SUNNY weather and a packed day of events brought more than 1,800 people young and old to the second annual Raglan Day.

The family fun day, which was brought back last year following a 30 year hiatus, proved to be hugely popular with people attending from all across Gwent.

After a rain soaked week, the sun came out and people were treated to a jam packed schedule, with nearly double the amount of visitors turning out compared to last year.

Four floats took part in the parade around midday which made its way from the centre of the village down to the Sports Field, where a huge array of stalls were put up in addition to displays from a dog show, a bungee water slide and a wealth of singing talent performing on the main stage.

Festival secretary Kim Knight, said: “For the village it’s great in bringing all the community together and that’s what all the work by our small 10-person committee is all about.

“We have been working flat out since June and for the last couple of days we were putting it all together in the rain and mud but I’ve actually been able to take my wellies off today.”

Amongst the dozens of stalls were the Roaming Reptiles, Memory Lane featuring photos of past events in the village and Flour’d Up, a pop up stall serving fresh pizzas from the stove.

The Greyhound Welfare Dog Show was a highlight of the latter part of the day and there were also bakery and produce shows for everyone to compete in. Local AM Nick Ramsey was on hand to give out the awards.

Lucinda Merrett, 16, was one of the singers who took part on the day. She said: “The day has just been great and we are really thankful for the weather as that makes such a difference. It’s been an absolutely fantastic experience.”

Vivienne Kelly, of Rogerstone, whose pooch took part in the dog show, said: “I haven’t been to Raglan for many years but it’s nice to come back and see it. It’s such a lovely place and everyone has been really friendly.”
