Step back into valleys history


GET those walking boots on this June, and discover Blaenau Gwent's historical past with a series of walking archaeological tours.

The walks will be highlighting the archaeology of various locations throughout Blaenau Gwent.

Discover the history of our ironworks, tramroads, quarries and railroads, giving participants a great knowledge and understanding of their local environment.

During the last week of June, a number of walks will be taking place across the County Borough: The Bailey Trail: Tuesday, June 26 from 10am to 4:30pm from The Market Square Car Park, Brynmawr.

A 12-mile strenuous walk taking in the industrial archaeology associated with the infamous Crawshay and Joseph Bailey - the Nantyglo Ironmasters.

The Fothergill Trail: Wednesday, June 27 from 10am to 3pm from Sirhowy Ironworks, Dukestown Road.

An 8-mile moderate walk looking at the industrial archaeology associated with the Sirhowy Ironworks.

The Kendall and Darby Trail: Thursday, June 28 from 10am to 3pm starting from the Civic Centre, Ebbw Vale.

A 5-mile moderate walk looking the industrial archaeology of the Beaufort Ironworks and Ebbw Vale Steelworks.

The Homfray Trail: Friday, June 29 from 10am to 3.00pm starting from Morgan Street Car Park, Tredegar. A 6-mile strenuous walk taking in industrial archaeology of the Tredegar including the Ironworks, Town Clock, Bedwellty House and Cholera Cemetery.

Each walk will be led by Blaenau Gwent Heritage Officer, Frank Olding.
