RESIDENTS in Newport have been complaining about some strange smells in the air.

Readers have provided a variety of descriptions of the stench, ranging from "rotten fish guts" to "dried urine", with reports coming from across the city.

One reader from Coedkernew, Jason Webb, said that he notices the smell of rotting meat daily and typically in the afternoons.

He said: "I haven't been able to have a barbecue this year because the smell is so revolting nobody could eat with it."

Two other readers believe the smell is coming from somewhere along Spytty Road, with it becoming more prominent towards Lysaght Village.

Cheryl Sims reported a 'dried urine' stench while Madelaine Sheen described a strong 'ammonia-like' smell coming from the old Carcraft site.

Berys Bennett believed that the smell was coming from the Uskmouth power station.

An online commenter noted that they had noticed a smell earlier this week in and around Corporation Road, but said that it had since faded, while another mentioned something similar on Fields Road on Thursday.

Speaking today, a council spokeswoman said that they had received no complaints through their environmental health department.

In April, an unpleasant smell was reported in the Maesglas, Rogerstone, and Rodney Parade areas of the city.

A council spokesman told the Argus at the time that engineering work at the landfill site in Maesglas may have resulted in "additional odours" in the local area.

Last December, residents had to put up with pungent fumes after around 40,000 tonnes of wood chippings were set alight at the Alexandra Docks.

The foul smoke and smell spread across Newport for two months and the smell travelled as far away as Chepstow - 20 miles away.

The woodchip was eventually moved to another part of the Docks where it was dampened down.
