A MONMOUTHSHIRE man has expressed his anger at the ongoing work on the Heads of the Valleys Road.

Kevin Machen, from Clydach in Abergavenny, said the work on the road has caused damage to two of his cars and is causing heavy amounts of traffic on his own road.

The 62-year-old, who has lived on James Terrace for the past 10 years, has said residents in the area “were told or made to believe that compensation would be paid if any damage or excessive disturbance occurred”.

Mr Machen said: “A lot of residents and myself thought that we would be given compensation but that has not been the case, we have tried contacting the people concerned such as Costain and was told to go through the council [Monmouthshire County Council] insurance yet they said no.

“I have had both my cars damaged by pot holes in the road and have ended up with windscreen chips and my wing mirror damaged.

“It was only £155 of damage as well, so I wasn’t too bothered, but it’s still annoying when you think it would be compensated.”

The current works that are ongoing on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road are by the engineering solutions company Costain.

The company chose to dual the second section of the A465 Heads of the Valleys scheme between Gilwern and Brynmawr, passing through Clydach, and moved onto the site in December.

The design for the improved road includes a 50mph speed limit, improved junctions, extra laybys and a split-level carriageway.

Due to the works, Mr Machen not only expressed his anger at the car damage, but said he feared the increase in traffic would affect residents on James Terrace with young families.

He said: “You only need to stand by the edge of the road and the heavy lorries are coming round at a right speed. If you step out [to cross the road] you are dead. I fear for the families with young children.”

Mr Machen, who lives with his partner, said its making himself and residents on the road upset and angry, and is hopeful that something can be done to help it.

“It’s caused so many problems, it’s being passed between the council and Costain and neither are owning up to what is being caused.”

Monmouthshire County Council and Costain were both contacted for comment.
