A DIRECTOR of a wood recycling company has appeared in court accused of breaching an environmental permit following a large wood chippings fire at Newport docks.

Dennis Burke, of Curwen Terrace, North Cornelly, Bridgend, faces two allegations following a wood fire at South Wales Wood Recycling Ltd on East Way Road, Alexandra Docks, which started on November 16, 2015.

Burke appeared at Newport Magistrates' Court today charged with an offence of a person keeping controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution or harm to human health and failure to comply with/contravene the requirements of an environmental permit condition.

The company also faces the same two charges in relation to Alexandra Docks along with two charges in relation to land in Maesteg of causing controlled waste and wood chip to be deposited on land at Old Llynfi Power Station which did not benefit from an environmental permit.

The company is also charged with between December 15, 2015 and March 5, 2016 to have kept controlled waste namely wood chips in manner likely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human health.

Neither Burke or the company entered any pleas. He will next appear in court on November 10.
