THOUSANDS of people across Gwent took part in the world’s biggest Coffee Morning today.

Across the UK, Macmillan Coffee Mornings were held in hubs, cafes, garden centres and family homes to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The annual event has raised more than £138m since it started in 1990, with the money going to support those with cancer.

Just some of the Gwent businesses taking part in the coffee morning included: Newport’s Raw Juice Bar, Gaer Community Centre, Widdershins Centre in Torfaen, Chepstow Garden Centre and in Nightingale Court, Newport.

Lucinda Gough, community development worker at Gaer Community Centre, said: “It’s been a great day, we had children bake cakes for the coffee morning and some of our regular visitors came in and they had either baked cakes or bought them.

"We have a steady flow of people come in throughout the morning and afternoon.

“We’ve raised more than £80."

More than 40 people turned up to a coffee morning held in the Widdershins Centre at Age Connects Torfaen and raised £300 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Emma Wootten, development co-ordinator for Age Connects Torfaen said “We look forward every year to hosting this coffee morning for a really important cause, it’s a chance for staff members to show off their talents and great opportunity to bring everyone together.”

Torfaen MP Nick Thomas-Symonds attended several coffee mornings across the county, including one hosted by the South Atlantic Medal Association 1982, an group for veterans of the Falklands Conflict.

Mr Thomas-Symonds said: "It is brilliant that so many people in Torfaen have been hosting their own Coffee Mornings to raise money. I’ve had some great discussions with people, all while raising money for a good cause."

Susan Morris, head of services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales said: “The number of people living with cancer in Wales is expected to reach 240,000 by 2030 – and Macmillan Cancer Support wants to ensure that, in future, no-one faces cancer alone.

“The money raised by World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is vital in helping to fund Macmillan’s services for cancer patients, including funding our nurses, physiotherapists, welfare benefits advisers, and information centres in hospitals, our work campaigning for better cancer care for patients, as well as supporting and providing information for their loved ones.”
