AN arts project is appealing for volunteers to help revive the social history of a treasured Newport community scheme.

The ‘A Thousand Voices’ project, funded by the Heritage Lottery over a two-year period, will collect stories about the The Community House Church, Eton Road.

The project aims to document and celebrate the work and history of the centre since its opening in 1969 - from its design and construction to its decades serving Newport’s communities.

The project will be co-ordinated by Marion Webber, who recently completed a interactive textile art project on display at Maindee Library.

Speaking about the new project, she said she hopes the appeal will attract “users, past and present, to engage their memories and retell their stories of a shared history (and) multicultural legacy”.

“The memories and artefacts will be captured into digital stories and pictures to be preserved for the future,” she said.

“The project will also offer young people the opportunity to learn new skills for the digital age.”

The Community House currently welcomes people from all faiths and backgrounds, offering English classes, crafts groups and computer sessions.

Following a launch at the centre tomorrow, at 6.15pm, organisers are appealing for 50 volunteers “to make the project a success”.

Previous experience is not necessary and training will be provided in exchange for volunteers time and commitment.

For the training to take place, the project also hopes to recruit 10 volunteers who will receive training from Gwent Archives and People’s Collection Wales and work to train others in the community.

Stories and collected artefacts from the project will also be displayed at exhibitions in July 2017 and 2018.
