THE campaign to save Newport's Chartist mural is being taken to Europe this weekend.

History lecturer Les James, from the University of Wales, Newport, is discussing the campaign at a lecture in Amsterdam.

He will highlight the debate over the threatened mosaic as an example of the kind of issues that classroom teachers should raise with pupils.

The mosaic, in the tunnel between John Frost Square and Upper Dock Street, could be demolished under plans to redevelop the city centre.

Developers Modus say it is too costly to save and plan to build a new one in its place.

Mr James praised Newport children such as ten-year-old Carlton French, a pupil at Lliswerry junior school, who launched a petition to save the mural.

He said: "It's great to see pupils kick starting this public debate. They're doing exactly what the Chartists believed in, exercising their democratic voice.

Mr James wants Newport's Chartist mosaic to be photographically recorded in detail, and said if it can't be relocated he wants a new one commissioned, produced with school and community involvement.

Mr James will be speaking at a conference at Amsterdam university, called The Professional Teaching of History: UK and Dutch perspectives.

The chartist history is more linked to Newport's past, than some burnt out ruin they just banned from flattening in Maindee, Newport has it's priorities all wrong, but then, the ruling hoi polloi of Newport in 1839 hated the chartists too.

The new development will bring jobs and some boost to the local economy, but in the long term if we are not careful Newport will lose any sense of its own identity and just become another 21st century town centre.

Anyone who's visited the states nows how most downtown areas are to all intents and purposes identical where shops have adopted corporate identity to the degree where almost every McDonalds or Starbucks or Wal-Mart has an identical frontage and layout.

We should protect the few unique symbols we have.

Good point Mr Parker, but about 20years to late for the U.K.
Why doesn't Newport go to the other extreme and build a truely unique symbol to their memory to set us apart?
What about an Angel of the North type statement to act as a memorial, and drag in a few punters to the Port?

Mind you saying -

''THE campaign to save Newport's Chartist mural is being taken to Europe this weekend''

Seems a bit different to-
''Mr James wants Newport's Chartist mosaic to be photographically recorded in detail, and said if it can't be relocated he wants a new one commissioned, produced with school and community involvement''

The whole story seems well ...a bit self defeating??

I'll keep saying it - make a choice - development or old mural... People are too busy trying "to have their cake and eat it" and it doesn't work like that, never has and never will. If people want the new development, then they will have to accept that the mural was built in a stupid place in a stupid way, you can't stand there and hold a developer to ransom for someone elses' mistakes!

The mural is only 20-30 years old(not exactly heritage) and 'cannot be saved'. Why not just create a new one which will last for a lot longer in the new city centre. In a more suitable location, which isn't going to be knocked down in a few years.

And how many people actually go to see the mural, its in a dark tunnel!!, if its that special why not create a new one in a more prominent place, which vistors might notice!.

Al, you are completely spot on! Newport will always be linked to the Chartists. A 1970s mosaic in a horrible 1960s shopping precinct is not the best we can come up with! The new Friars Walk mall will bring the shopping up-to-date and a condition of planning permission is Chartist art! What on earth are people moaning about?

This whole thing is getting completely out of hand! This mosaic, nice though it may be, it certainly not a historic artefact!

The plans for the new development already include a brand new Chartist-themed art work (which incidentally will not be located in a dark tunnel!

Everybody please chill out!

When I read that the owner of that dilapadated eyesore on Malpas Road, The Rising Sun, claimed that the recent fire had caused £250,000 damage, I had an idea how to save the Chartist mural. The council should insure it for £250,000 (the replacement cost). A fire is hard to arrange there, but maybe one of those council cleaning vehicles could accidentally run into it, and hey-presto!, we can pay for the replacement!
