THE sentencing of an arsonist who caused an explosion that ripped through a Newport home has been delayed to allow for further psychiatric reports.

William Flindell, aged 50, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to the charge ‘Arson being reckless as to whether life is endangered’ at Cardiff Crown Court last year.

Today he appeared at Newport Crown Court in relation to the explosion in George Street on April 2 last year.

The incident involved a fire spreading to a gas meter and one occupant taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In December 2016, a jury was directed to find Flindell not-guilty of a second charge, ‘arson with intent to endanger life’ due to a lack of prosecution evidence.

At the time, Judge Michael Fitton QC adjourned to allow for psychiatric and probation reports to be presented.

Today, a psychiatric report was referenced in court mentioning Flindell's chronic alcoholism and struggles with depression.

This report, by a consultant psychiatrist, addressed whether Flindell is "dangerous".

The judge and counsel also discussed the suitability of mental health orders in lieu of a custodial jail sentence.

Judge Michael Fitton QC added he would take direction on an "hybrid order" that would allow Flindell to "start his custodial term in hospital (and) if the hospital can't do anything for him he will be returned to prison."

Flindell will see another psychiatrist before returning to court to be sentenced on Friday, February 24.
