LAST week we featured a picture of the New Almshouses, Stow Hill, Newport from 1903.
On March 6, 1901, a public meeting was held where it was decided "the memory of our late beloved Majesty, Queen Victoria, and her long and glorious reign, should be commemorated in this town; and that such commemoration should take the form of New Almshouses to be erected on a site generously given for the purpose by the Right Honourable Lord Tredegar."
The venture cost £3,500 and the foundation stone was laid on November 4, 1902.

Pretty sure today's picture shows the Almshouses at the top of Stow Hill near the Cathedral.
This used to come under the Council but was transferred some years ago to a Housing Association.
The proper name is Roger Williams and Queen Victoria Almshouses and has about 10 flats.
Similar flats are in Waterloo Road near Belle Vue Park.
