A PARENT has complained that children are not able to play in the streets of St Julians because of excessive dog mess.

Ky-lee Hill, 39, of Durham Road, in St Julians, said the amount of dog mess near the Glebelands makes it very difficult to walk his children to Glan Usk school.

Newport City Council has said that community safety wardens are patrolling the streets daily, and that they issue fixed penalty notices if they witness any incidents.

The council is also asking residents to come forward if they have information.

The news comes a year after the Argus reported that a group of parents from St Julians were having to walk with their children in the road on the way to school because of dog mess.

Mr Hill said this week: “It’s both on the road and on the pavement, it’s everywhere. It’s absolutely infested with dog mess, it’s disgusting.

“It’s in all the pathways around the school.

“The kids can’t go out to play. The other day I took my girl out with her bike and it took me more than hour to clean it off her tyres.

“I have to wipe off her shoes daily before she goes into school.”

Mr Hill, who works for Royal Mail, said the issue has been “worse than it has ever been” since October. He has reported the matter to the council.

“When I’ve nicely asked dog walkers to clean the mess up they have said I was threatening them,” he added. “A lot of people have had enough and are cleaning it up themselves.

“I have only seen a dog warden once.”

Councillor Bob Poole, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for regulatory functions, said: “It is appalling that irresponsible dog owners do not pick up after their animals and that other members of the public suffer as a result.

“Our community safety wardens are patrolling the streets daily and issue fixed penalty notices if they witness any incidents.

“We would also ask residents who have information about those responsible for blighting our streets to contact the council as we need evidence to take action against them.”
