ROYAL Gwent Hospital nurses are appealing for donations for a fundraising meal for a colleague who had a triple amputation.

Jayne Carpenter, 49, who had been working as a nurse at the Royal Gwent Hospital since 1991, suffered from sepsis - a condition where the body’s immune system goes into overdrive trying to fight an infection – at the end of April last year. Because of sepsis, Mrs Carpenter was on a ventilator and heavily sedated for nine weeks.

When her limbs started to gangrene, the surgeons carried out a triple amputation to save her life. Shortly after the amputation, her colleagues raised nearly £6,000.

They are now busy organising a dinner and dance for her and her husband Rob at the Glen-Yr-Afon, in Usk, where they got married. The event will be to raise funds to make adaptations to Mrs Carpenter’s house.

They found a sponsor for the event on Saturday, March 11, within hours of the Argus publishing their appeal back in August.

Paula Plumb, who works as a nurse at the Royal Gwent Hospital’s day surgery, said: “I have sorted out the menus with the Glen-Yr-Afon and the tickets should be printed and on sale in the next ten days.

She said: “I have booked the disco and I have also been able to secure the live duo The Tena Ladies, who are very good. I am left looking for raffle prizes, helium balloons and anyone who can give me a good offer on wine.”

As previously reported by the Argus, Mrs Carpenter has made an amazing recovery and she now is at home and walking. She said her goal for next spring is to walk up Pen-Y-Fan to raise money for the Sepsis Trust and for the Rookwood Hospital.
