TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular former teacher.

Barbara Peel, who was born in April 1939, taught at numerous schools in the area for more than 15 years.

Mrs Peel attended Swansea College for two years before marrying her future husband, Rob Peel, in 1963.

When Mr Peel started working at Llanwern, Mrs Peel started supply work in Cwmbran, before taking a break from the classroom.

“We moved to Lodge Hill, Caerleon, in 1964,” added Mr Peel. “She started teaching again in 1974.

“Children were her life.”

Mrs Peel taught at Caerleon Lodge Hill primary and infants, and Charles Williams Church In Wales Primary School.

Mr Peel said: “As a supply teacher Barbara taught everything and anything.

“It was the infants school that she really enjoyed.”

James Watt, who attended Charles Williams Church in Wales Primary School, paid tribute to his former teacher.

“She was a lovely and caring lady,” he said.

“She was born to teach.”

Margaret Morris, another former pupil at the school, said: “I remember her being a kind lady, who would always help us.

“She was a superb and talented teacher.”

Mrs Peel retired to care for her grandchildren in 1994, and moved from Caerleon in 2015, due to ill health.

“Even when she became ill with dementia she kept talking about teaching,” added her husband.

Jan Quarrington, Mrs Peel’s daughter, said: “She was loving and caring.

“She passed away on December 23 and she was such a fabulous person.”

Mrs Peel leaves a husband, two children and four grandchildren.

The funeral will take place at St Cadocs Church, Caerleon, on Wednesday, at 12.30pm.
