ST JOSEPH’S star Andrew Selby has vowed to live up to his ‘Superstar’ nickname when he challenges WBC international flyweight champion Ardin Diale next month.

Experienced Filipino fighter Diale will put his title on the line in a February 4 showdown with the Welshman at London’s Olympia.

Selby holds his opponent, who boasts 32 wins from 46 bouts in a career spanning more than a decade, in high regard – Diale has fought for a world title in the past.

But 28-year-old Selby, the British and IBF inter-continental belt holder, is supremely confident that he will have too much for Diale to deal with on the night.

“It is a fantastic move in the right direction for me as Diale is good, strong and durable, and he has boxed at the top level for many years,” he said.

“He is the sort of opponent I have to beat to prove my credentials as a future world champion.

“I’m on a roll and I want to fight for the world title by the end of this year. I’m ready and I know I will do it.

“It will create sporting history with my brother (Lee) also being a world champion – the Selbys will really be on the boxing map.”

He went on to add: “It is a perfect chance for me to showcase my skills.

“I’ve got the nickname ‘Superstar’ and I will live up to that – I’m going all the way.

“The supporters who come on the night will see what all the hype is about.”

Diale challenged for the WBO world flyweight crown in February 2011 but came up short against Mexico’s Julio Cesar Miranda.

His last fight was in December when he outpointed fellow countryman Michael Enriquez to claim the vacant WBC international strap.

Selby, whose aim is to “clean up” the flyweight division, has only fought seven times in the pro ranks, a figure which falls way short of Diale’s tally of 46.

However, Selby said: “Experience is one thing and he has got plenty of that, but talent and skills are what wins the day.

“I respect all my opponents and Diale is no different, but I will win and I plan to win big by knocking him out.”

The bout takes place on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jnr’s tilt at the IBO world super-middleweight title against belt holder Renold Quinlan.

Meanwhile, unbeaten St Joes boxer Morgan Jones has revealed his next fight will be in Cardiff on March 11, while Pontypool’s Mason Jones is in action in London’s Mayfair on January 26.
