A REPORT on the £1.2 billion City Deal has outlined the expected contributions of local authorities.

The deal, if agreed by councils, would bring in more than £1 billion investments to South East Wales.

The UK and Welsh governments have committed £500 million to the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal, while 10 local authorities will be required to make a contribution towards the £120 million of the total £1.2 billion pot over a 20-year period of the deal.

A report for Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council on the deal details the proposed sums each council would contribute, in terms of its population size.

Newport City Council's contribution would total 12 per cent, which would equate to £11.76 million, whilst Caerphilly County Borough Council's contribution would be £14.4 million (12 per cent).

Monmouthshire County Council and Torfaen Borough Council would both pay £7.32 million (6.1 per cent) each, whilst Blaenau Gwent council would contribute £5.52 million (4.60 per cent).

Other authorities' contributions include Vale of Glamorgan Council which would pay £10.2 million (8.5 per cent), Bridgend County Borough Council would spend £11.2 million (9.40 per cent), Vale of Glamorgan Council would pay £10.2 million (8.5 per cent) and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council £4.68m (3.90 per cent).

The biggest contributor would be Cardiff Council, which would give £28.4 million (23.70 per cent).

The councils will fund the money by borrowing and will be required to pay interest on the treasury's £375 million.

The deal would also see a regional cabinet established, which would vote on ideas put forward by councils.

Each of the councils will soon vote to either approve or object to the deal.

A Newport council spokeswoman said: "A meeting of full council will consider and vote on Newport’s involvement and support of the City Deal on January 31."
