A LOUD bang caused by an explosion during a Newport garage fire awoke residents in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Fire crews from across south Wales were called to St Stephen’s Road at just before 1.25am to tackle the blaze at the commercial premises.

Crews from Duffryn, Maindee, Malpas and Roath as well as an aerial platform from Cardiff and a bowser from Pontypridd were called while firefighters from Blaenavon and New Inn have also attended.

St Stephen’s Road resident, Lewis Pitman, whose property backs onto the affected garage said his father heard a loud bang very early in the morning.

“My dad lives at the back of the house as he's converted that part of the house,” he said.

“We have a garage at the back at part of the fire had spread onto ours. There was very little damage to that though compared to the other garage.

“He woke up during the night after one of the petrol tanks caught fire. There was a very loud bang,” added Mr Pitman.

Firefighters remained at the scene until around 11.40am, when the final crew from Duffryn left the commercial property on St Stephen’s Road.

Mr Pitman added that the garage was completely destroyed in the fire, and while the flames took hold, a number of cars were inside the premises.

“Apparently six cars were in the garage at the time,” he said.

“The roof has caved in and it's completely destroyed. The garage is more or less gone.”

The St Stephen’s Road resident added that in the morning, officers from Gwent Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) investigators were looking over the site.

A spokeswoman from the SWFFRS has confirmed that the forensic investigations are ongoing to find out what caused the fire.

She added that at this stage, the cause of the fire is undetermined and the garage will be demolished due to the damage suffered in the fire, which will be arranged with the owner.
