MPs have revealed a seven point vision to help “revitalise” the steel industry.

The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Steel yesterday (Monday, January 22) published ‘Steel 2020’, which sets out a plan for securing the steel industry’s future.

The report found the UK steel industry is currently “hamstrung by a toxic combination of policies that hobble the industry by comparison to global competitors”, and calls on the Government to provide a level playing field which will allow the industry to “thrive nationally and globally”.

The recommendations include, a “radical reshaping of the energy market to reduce uncompetitive energy costs”, “ensure free and fair international trade” through a “clear UK post-Brexit trade strategy”, a policy to use domestic steel “as far as possible” and a review of business rates.

Other points include supporting supply and value chains within the steel sector, boost productivity by upskilling the workforce and action to ensure skills are not lost if workers are made redundant.

Jessica Morden, MP for Newport East, who is a vice chair of the APPG, said: “This is a wide-ranging report which offers a path towards a brighter future for the UK steel industry if imminent action is taken.”
