COUNCILLORS in a Gwent town have expressed renewed confidence in a new Post Office opening after meeting staff from the postal service.

A campaign for a new Post Office to open up in Pontllanfraith has been ongoing since July after two closed in the town since December 2015, forcing the public have to travel to either Blackwood or Ystrad Mynach to sort out their post.

Ward members Gez Kirby, Colin Gordon and Mike Adams joined MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, in meeting Post Office managers Stuart Taylor and Gareth Shylon to press the case for a new site last month.

Cllr Kirby said: “We have been petitioning since the summer and have received widespread support, it seems that there is a clear need for a post office in the town by people whether old or young.

“I have heard how older people feel a bit removed and this worries me. I think if we do get a new post office it will not be taken for granted which it may have been before and that’s a positive.”

Launched by the three councillors, the petition has reached around 500 signatures while ideas for a postal service to be renewed in the town has focused on reopening the former Commercial Street branch, which has been vacant since closing 13 months ago.

Chris Evans MP said: “I am determined to see a Post Office back in Pontllanfraith. People need this vital service.

“In the meeting the Post Office made a commitment that they are seeking to open a new branch in the area and we will continue to do what we can to help.”

A Post Office spokesman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Pontllanfraith Post Office. We can reassure customers that we continue to work hard to restore the service to the community and are committed to maintaining services in the area.”
