A TEENAGE boy from a Torfaen comprehensive school has died.

The 14-year-old, who attended Abersychan Comprehensive School, was taken to Abergavenny’s Nevill Hall Hospital on Wednesday, where he was later pronounced dead.

On Thursday, the school’s head teacher posted a letter on the website informing parents and carers of the situation.

“It was with great sadness and shock that we learned today of the passing of one of our pupils," said Phil Collins, the school’s head teacher.

“We are united in our loss and it will take us some time to come to terms with this news.”

Abersychan School have arranged for specialist colleagues to offer support for members of the school’s community following the announcement on Thursday.

“We are a strong community and will come together to support each other in the coming days and weeks,” added Mr Collins.

“We have already begun to have support from specialist colleagues who will work with us, our pupils and staff in the coming days.

“At this time our thoughts are very much with family and friends.”

A spokeswoman from Gwent Police confirmed that the boy’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

“A 14-year-old-boy from the Pontypool area was conveyed to Nevill Hall Hospital on Wednesday, February 8, where he was sadly pronounced deceased,” she said.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been submitted to the coroner.”

The three councillors of the Abersychan ward – Gwyneira Clark, Giles Davies and Wayne Tomlinson – have issued a joint statement, stating their condolences at this time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time,” the statement read.

“The devastating news of this young man’s sudden death has had a devastating effect on our community for someone so young so loved and respected by everyone.”
