Last week I spent a brilliant morning with fellow Newport MPs and AMs, learning more about Newport County’s work in the community.

This included an enjoyable session with Year 5 from Maindee Primary who were learning about nutrition and sport, and took part in a presentation on the range of activities organised by Newport County, including walking football, Soccer Tots, the Women's Team, afterschool clubs, Premier League Primary Stars, the college and more.

A big thank you to Norman Parselle and team for all that they do, and to all volunteers running community sports groups in our area.

I also had a chance to catch up with Liberty Steel to find out more about the GFG Foundation, which is being created to mark their 25th anniversary.

The new body, which will support both local and national initiatives, aims to help equip young people in Britain’s manufacturing heartlands with new skills, so could be of benefit to Newport.

The Parliamentary All Party Steel Group, of which I am vice chair, has taken evidence from a wide range of organisations associated with steel, and recently published a report setting out the steps the Government needs to take to protect our industry.

We must keep pressurising the Government to prioritise British Steel in procurement, help with uncompetitive high energy costs, and tackle illegal steel dumping. You can find a link to the report, which includes mentions of Llanwern, Orb and Liberty Steel in Newport, on my website at www.jessicamorden.com/steel_report.

I have also been out door knocking in Alway to speak to residents, and have held advice surgeries in my office in Clarence House and Magor, where constituents raised issues ranging from tax credits and disabled benefits, to the rights of EU nationals now that Article 50 has been triggered.

Just a quick reminder that there’s plenty of opportunity at the moment to have your say on local transport issues which affect commuters in Newport East.

You can access the Assembly’s consultation on the Wales and Borders Rail Franchise at the Welsh Assembly’s website (closes Thursday, February 23) and the Department of Transport’s consultation on the future of the Severn Bridges which closes on March 10 can be accessed at https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ICS1O/.

This month it was also a pleasure to meet with the Newport Legacy Group from the Christchurch Centre to talk about the role of an MP, and next week I’m very pleased to welcome a number of constituents who are coming on tours of the House of Commons.

If you, or your group or organisation would like to visit, tours are free on specific days when booked through an MP - please call my office on 01633 841725 and we’ll see what we can do to help.
