I WOULD like to place on record my thanks to Newport Live and Newport City Council for the use of the Glebelands on February 12 to enable Newport Harriers to host a Gwent League Cross Country Fixture. Almost 1000 runners aged from 9 to over 70 took part in races throughout the afternoon.
The meeting started with the youngest age groups (under 11 boys followed by under 11 girls) at noon and the largest race the senior men finished at 4pm.
With parents and supporters about 1500 people enjoyed an afternoon of sport.
Newport Harriers are grateful to Newport City Council and Newport Live for providing and maintaining an excellent facility for athletics at Newport Stadium, Spytty Road and now we have an opportunity to take the sport of athletics to another level by hosting big fixtures like this.
I would also like to record my thanks the small team of helpers and marshals without whom the event would not have been possible.
Several hours of effort were required in setting up the course and taking it down at the end of the event.
Some working until nightfall on Sunday and returning Monday morning to ensure the sight was cleared.
