TWO reporters from the Argus will be among thousands donning their running gear as they take part in this year’s City of Newport Half Marathon.

Angharad Williams, 37, and Steven Prince, 27, have been busy preparing for the 13.1 mile race on Sunday.

Mr Prince, of Stow Park Drive, Newport, will be running his first half marathon, in memory of his dad who passed away from cancer last month.

He will be making a donation to Woking & Sam Beare Hospice in Surrey, to thank staff for the care they provided his dad.

“My dad was a fantastic sportsman and before he passed away, he told me that he once ran a half marathon in one hour and 23 minutes,” said Mr Prince, who signed up for the race after his dad’s diagnosis in October.

“I don’t think I’ll be beating that time.”

He has been training around Newport and taking part in Parkruns to prepare for the Admiral-sponsored race.

Ms Williams, of New Inn, Pontypool, will be taking part in her second half marathon and her first in Newport.

She started running less than a year ago when she signed up to the Cardiff Half Marathon, which she completed in two hours and 45 minutes.

“When I started I was terribly unfit and couldn’t run for two minutes without stopping, but I kept going out for a run and would get a little further each time,” she said.

“I took part in a 5k race and hated it. The weather was terrible and I stopped quite a few times on the way round the route.

“It was disheartening as I was just a few months away from the half marathon, but I kept going and was able to run further each time.”

The Argus reporter will be running with the Cwmbrân Pub Runners, who she trains with twice a week.

“I will enjoy this half marathon more than my first because I feel there is less pressure on me,” she added.

“As long as I finish I will be happy.”

The Argus, media partners for the race in aid of St David’s Hospice, will be running a special preview with everything you need to know about the event in Friday’s newspaper. And, on Monday a special supplement will include a list of every runner who completed the race, along with times and pictures from the day.
