THE centre of Newport could be recognised as one of the best places for a night out if an application is successful.

Newport City Council’s cabinet gave the go-ahead to plans to apply for Purple Flag status, which is awarded to areas which offer a varied, safe and enjoyable night out, yesterday.

The accolade is a national scheme run by the Association of Town and City Management aiming to improve the image of nightlife across the UK.

Speaking at yesterday’s meeting, the council’s deputy leader Cllr Ray Truman said the opening of Friars Walk in November 2015 had revitalised the city centre.

“We’ve got a fantastic facility here which many of us thought we could never see,” he said.

“But its here and it’s delivering.

“Let’s talk it up and lets use it.”

Around 65 towns and cities in the UK have been awarded the accreditation, but Swansea is currently the only one in Wales.
