A CWMBRAN man whose car window was shot at while he was driving has spoken about his anger and fear of “being targeted” by yobs.

David Rogers had been driving out of Rhymney Court in Thornhill on Wednesday morning when he heard a bang behind him.

The 27-year-old leapt out of the car to inspect the damage to find the window shattered by what appeared to be an air gun pellet.

He said there were three passers-by who alerted him to the damage, including a woman pushing a pram whom, he feels, “could have easily been shot instead”.

Following the incident, Mr Rogers admits that he now has genuine concerns for the safety of his three young children.

He said: “Obviously I was scared for myself but since it happened all I’ve been thinking about is my family’s wellbeing.”

“I’ve just been asking myself ‘what if the kids had been in the back’, as they’re usually travelling with me everywhere.

“The shot just missed the baby seat where my youngest could have been sitting. It’s just scary.

“I was really jumped after it happened and when I spoke to the police, I had just been shot at – what did they expect?

“It just makes me think ‘am I a target?’ but this area is so tight-knit, everyone knows everyone which makes me doubt that someone would keep that from me.”

Mr Rogers’ father-in-law Kevin Wall was also in the car and told the Argus yesterday that he was sure that the source of the damage was an air rifle.

He added that the woodland on the hill behind the estate was a well-frequented shooting spot.

He said: “A lead pellet is only a small thing but it easily could have taken someone’s eye out.

“To think my grandkids could have been in the back, it’s just not on. My daughter’s worried about the kids going out now.”

On a public Facebook group for Thornhill residents, of which Mr Wall is an admin, other people in the area have shared similar experiences.

One user on the Thornhill Events and Residents group, Janine Eyers, said that she had woken up on Thursday morning to find her car windscreen smashed, with an insurance company “confirming it was hit from the outside by a small object, ie, a gun pellet”.

Mr Wall added: “The page was set up in a way to help bring the community together and we’re trying to make Thornhill a better place for everyone.

“Incidents like this just sets all that hard work back.

“While criminal activity has calmed down recently it’s still not good.”

Police are still appealing for information regarding the incident.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “At 8.10am on Wednesday, April 19, we received a report of criminal damage to a car in Rhymney Court in Thornhill.

“We are investigating this and anyone with information is asked to call us on 101 quoting log number 125 19/4/17.”
