A CWMCARN youth group has reopened to help tackle anti-social behaviour in the town.

The group - Cwmcarn Institute Youth Club - was first set up in 1999 and was run by Vivien Morris until 2014, but had to close because not enough support was available for it to carry on.

However, Mrs Morris’s daughter, Ceri Hillier, reopened the group this week after people came forward to offer to volunteer, including people who previously attended her mother’s youth group.

The 29-year-old said she is delighted by how many people have offered to help and said she hopes the group will be able to “tackle” the anti-social behaviour which has been ongoing in the town.

She said: “The youth group is run voluntarily and is helped by a variety of grants to keep it going but sadly it had to close in 2014.

“Our community has seen a rise in anti-social behaviour in the last year and we asked what we could do to help with the facilities that we have.

“We (the community) had a lot of meetings and a lot of people got together. After talking we now have 10 strong volunteers wanting to give their time to keep the youth group going.”

The youth group, which is based at Cwmcarn Institute and Village Hall, officially reopened on Wednesday and is open for children aged from seven to 11.

It will be open two Wednesdays and two Thursdays during the month, and will alternate the days each week.

Ms Hillier said she is confident the youth group will help with anti-social behaviour in the town, as it will keep the children occupied but it will also keep them away from any dangerous situations.

She said: “We will accept anyone into the youth club and we are not going to exclude anyone.

“These children will be able to enjoy themselves in a safe environment and not be scared to be outside.

“Being in the youth group will help them grow up with the respect and attitude that all the other people did when they were in my mother’s youth group.

“We want to make things in Cwmcarn 10 times better and we are grateful to everyone who has come forward to support us and help us.”
