DISABLED teen Megan Martin has spoken for the first time ever, much to the delight of her family.

They have raised thousands to get the cerebral palsy and epilepsy-sufferer language therapy sessions, and said they were “overwhelmed and astounded” when the 19-year-old, from Coed Eva, called her sister, Kylie, out of the blue.

The 28-year-old said: “It was the first word for Megan. I felt proud, gobsmacked and completely overwhelmed.

“Especially knowing it was my name. We made sure she said it twice just so we weren’t mistaken. It was so amazing to witness it.

A GoFundMe page, ‘Help Megan Talk’, was set up by the family in August 2016, and has trended on the site, with thousands of pounds being donated to the Martin family from the community, friends and businesses.

Among them, is Cwmbran-based Goode’s Fitness, which has links with Megan’s brother, Ryan, and has pledged to help the family’s cause by hosting several charity boxing competitions.

So far the family have raised around £10,000 and also gave a “massive thank you” to Cwmbran-based We Fight Any Claim who have raised more than £2,000 toward the fund.

Megan receives 24-hour care from her mum, Monica Gough – a previous runner-up in our ‘Gwent Mum of the Year’ competition.

Her sister added: “As you can imagine we are now super excited for speech therapy as we know she is trying so hard to talk.

“Megan is the glue to our family. She brings us lot so close.

“She is our inspiration and she keeps us smiling as soon as she smiles. Her smile lights up a room.

“I chose a career as a support worker helping disabled adults because of Megan and she has definitely made me the person I am today”.

Megan officially starts language therapy sessions today, with the family optimistic about the potential of these sessions.
