A NEWPORT church is organising an unofficial attempt to break the world record for "Most Nationalities Collecting Litter."

Working with Keep Wales Tidy and Newport City Council, Bethel Community Church in Stow Hill, is organising a multinational group of volunteers who will participate in a mass clear up in the Pill area of the city on Saturday, April 29.

With the current Guinness World Record standing at 60, the church is aiming to get people representing 61 different countries.

Organiser Dylan Moore said: "The idea is that the whole community gets involved. Newport is such a diverse and interesting place these days and we want to celebrate that by doing something positive for the benefit of everybody."

He added: "As soon as we’ve mentioned the idea to people, they are very enthusiastic about getting on board. And everybody seems to know at least one person from a country we haven’t ticked off our list yet."

Organisers say they know that the record is breakable, as there are more than 60 nationalities represented in some Newport schools.

"The key will be who turns up on the day," said Mr Moore.

"I can’t think of a better reason to get out of bed on a Saturday morning. There will be such a great atmosphere, with people from all over the world working together for the common good.

"Sadly, when you watch the news, that’s not always what you see. But maybe Newport and Wales can set an example. All races and nationalities can come together, have fun and do something useful for the community at the same time."

The litter pick is the third part of a miniature festival happening this weekend.

Newport: World Port aims to celebrate the diversity of Newport’s community. It is funded by the Big Lottery’s Celebrate programme.

A miniature food festival will be followed by music, poetry and dance from around the world in an event at Bethel Community Church on Friday, April 28, from 6pm.

All are welcome to the world record attempt on April 29. Meet 10am outside Bethel Community Church, Stow Hill.
