NEWPORT County joined a range of football clubs in coming together yesterday to showcase the work they do for their communities.

A total of 72 English Football League (EFL) clubs demonstrated the impact of the work done through football-led community programmes and activities, on the first Community Day of Action.

Among them, County has been delivering initiatives including the school-based educational programme EFL’s Kinder +Sport Move and Learn, and the Premier Kicks community programme to improve sports participation and reduce anti-social behaviour. They also deliver EFL Trust Futsal for young people who have a passion for football and a desire to progress to university or work in sport, and Premier League Primary Stars with the club working in partnership with Monmouth Comprehensive School to create a literacy programme to help improve youngsters’ learning and enjoyment.

These programmes aim to highlight the importance of education through football-led programmes.

The club has also set up a walking football team to give an older generation of football fans a place to train and play, as well as a We Wear the Same Shirt team which gives people with mental health conditions and those with learning difficulties the opportunity to take part in the game.

To celebrate the Community Day of Action the club introduced St Woolos and Maindee Primary schools to the +Sport Move & Learn Sessions project. They also hosted a tournament with teams including Newport County Ladies.

Up to £50 million is invested every season by the EFL Trust and Club Community Trusts, to use football to help people in need in sport, education, health and community engagement programmes.
