A BLAENAU Gwent dancing group is paying tribute to a musical icon by launching a fundraising drive for solar energy, writes Mica Soellner.

Following the death of the American singer-songwriter Prince on April 21, 2016, it was revealed that the musician had donated thousands of dollars’ worth of solar panels in California.

Beaufort’s Ffin Dance Company has joined in with a six week project inspired by the Purple Rain singer to help charity 10:10 Climate Action’s £50,000 crowdfunding appeal.

Sue Lewis, the company’s artistic director, said: When you think of Prince you think of the colour purple, the skilled music making and of course his incredible dance ability.”

“So taking part in this project is a completely natural follow on - it allows us to do something great for the planet but also frees up vital funds for us to do more work with young people in our community.”

The charity’s crowdfunder aims to provide solar panels for groups in six locations across the country working on other issues Prince supported.

“Prince’s legacy was way more than just the music,” said Neil Jones, project manager at 10:10 Climate Action.

“With his support for clean energy, he helped underline a really key point - solar power is for everyone.”

“By helping Ffin Dance go solar, we can help an amazing group ramp up their work in tackling climate change.

“Importantly, we’ll give them more energy independence, so they can reduce their bills and spend more of their funds on the great work they do.”

Ffin Dance aims to empower women and young people through the power of dance, and visit ffindance.co.uk for information.
