UPDATE 12.45pm

A spokeswoman from West Mercia Police has said that efforts to reopen the road have begun.

She said that police received reports of a single vehicle collission near Pencraig, Ross-on-Wye at around 10am.

The vehicle, a green Land Rover, had overturned and the trailer attached to it, carrying three cows and three calves, had come loose.

All of the livestock have since been rounded up and the A40 between Monmouth and Whitchurch is slowly beginning to be reopened.

------------

COWS were reportedly loose on the A40 near Monmouth earlier this morning after the trailer carrying them overturned.

Emergency services were called to the accident at around 10am.

The stretch of the road between Dixton Roundabout and Whitchurch Roundabout remains closed in both directions.

Severe congestion has been reported in Monmouth, with diversions in place for commuters.
