A PONTYPOOL woman and her partner have set up a website to help locate lost dogs following the disappearance and recovery of her sister’s pooch.

In March, Cherry, a black Chihuahua Pomeranian cross with a white muzzle and curly tail, went missing in Abertillery, after going on a walk at the Cwmtillery Lakes.

She was found five days after members of the public helped to look for the dog as well as a crowdfunding page raising more than £1,000 towards the search efforts including a drone search with a thermal camera.

Jasmine Slingsby, whose sister Tink owns Cherry, and her partner Phil Corker have set up a website – findmylostdog.co.uk – following on from their own incident.

“When Cherry went missing, we got a lot of support in helping us to find her again,” said Miss Slingsby, 32, who now lives in Bakewell.

“We set up a Facebook page and that was very successful as we could reach a number of different people with that.”

In addition to helping with searches for lost dogs, the website can help with the creation of missing posters and the loan of waterproof clothing, among other items which could be helpful.

“The idea behind the page is that people can register so that if their dogs go missing, people from the local area can help out to find them,” she added.

“In our case, it was very difficult terrain for people to go and search but a drone was very helpful.

“There are other places in the UK which are equally difficult to access as well.

“It would mean that the best sort of resource can be used to help with finding the dog.

“It is also a good way of co-ordinating with one another as we appreciate that there are certain times of the day when people are unavailable.”

The search for Cherry involved members from Unmanned Aviation Services (UAS), working with the RSPCA, Gwent Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue also, before animal and owner were re-united in Cwmbran.

She was eventually located in an old mining tunnel.
