THE Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, has launched the search for a successor to chief constable Jeff Farrar.

Earlier this month Mr Farrar, who has led the force since 2013, announced that he will be retiring on June 30 - after 35 years of dedicated service.

Mr Cuthbert formally started the search for his replacement yesterday, with the role being publicised nationwide. The appointment will be on a five-year fixed term basis.

Commenting on the qualities he will be looking for in the candidates, Mr Cuthbert said: “I am looking for an enthusiastic, energetic and talented individual to lead Gwent Police and ensure it remains one of the top performing forces in England and Wales.

“This is an exciting opportunity to deliver community focussed policing in an area of South East Wales with diverse requirements. As with other forces, we face the same significant challenges with regards to the evolving nature of crime and reduced funding from the UK Government. However, this is a chance for someone to provide excellent leadership and continue the work of driving forward a force which is ambitious, progressive and always striving to improve.”

Earlier this month Mr Cuthbert launched his four-year police and crime plan for Gwent which had been developed in consultation with the community.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on May 18. Shortlisting will take place on May 22 with a familiarisation day planned for May 31. Interviews are scheduled to take place on the June 6. The Gwent Police and Crime Panel will then review the appointment process and consider Mr Cuthbert’s preferred candidate.
