DISGUSTING amounts of rubbish have continued to be dumped at a site formerly occupied by travellers.

Our pictures of the Tatton Road site show from January waste of all kinds - including food and rubbish bags - has continued to be strewn on Welsh-Government owned land at Lliswerry, Newport.

The Argus previously reported that, according to local reports, pet cats and dogs had been abandoned on the site, which is on Queensways Meadows Industrial Estate.

Hashim Sujeeun, who lives in Lliswerry, said the sight makes him "feel ill".

He said: "I think it's disgusting to see lots and lots of rubbish all over the place.

"There's got to be rats all over when it gets dark.

"It was sometime last week that I saw one of the caravans being taken out.

"The site is still bad and it needs cleaning up now."

He added: "It's been months and still fly-tippers are going there."

Recently a wall was put up at the front of the site, to deter fly-tippers from entering.

Claire Hodder, who lives near Tatton Road, said she hoped the wall would "stop the culprits".

"The wall has made it difficult to get onto the site," said Miss Hodder. "But if someone is determined they will find a way.

"The last time I saw the site there were animal cages and food.

"This morning I saw the back-end of a car which has been put there.

"I want the people who have done this to get caught."

A Newport City Council spokeswoman said: "The council is investigating whether any fly-tipping has encroached on land it owns."

A Welsh Government spokeswoman said: “We took legal action to regain possession of the Tatton Road site and this was granted earlier this month. Since then we have taken steps to secure the site and are now working on a programme to clear and re-develop it.”
