GWENT Police are appealing for information following an attempted robbery at a post office on Cardiff Road on Monday.

The incident occurred at around 9.25am on May 22, and a 53-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery.

He is in custody at this time but there are some people we believe may be able to help us with our enquiries.

The police would like to speak to a man with a dog and a woman with a child who were seen in the queue at the post office shortly before the attempted robbery took place.

UPDATE 1.50pm

A 53-year-old man from the Newport area has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and is in police custody.

UPDATE 10.35am

Gwent Police have confirmed that the incident was a robbery at the post office at 9.25am.

A spokeswoman said: "No one has been harmed but those in the premises have been left understandably shaken.

"Officers are currently at the scene and enquiries are on-going at this time."
