ARGUS readers have voiced their outrage at some drivers using a war memorial as a “parking space”.

We previously reported that a war memorial to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landing in 1944, which is situated in High Street in Newport city centre, is being used by some drivers to park vehicles.

Amy McCann, who owns McCann’s Rock N Ale Bar and is an Argus reader, said the whole situation was “totally unacceptable”.

She said: “I’m so annoyed that people think its OK to park on the memorial when its clearly not.

“It is really disrespectful.”

She added: “I think a little fence around the outside would be nice

“And I think a fundraiser at McCann’s would be great to raise money for a fence.”

Angeleleven, another reader of the Argus, said: “To park on a war memorial is truly appalling, but then to leave your tyres actually on a poppy wreath is totally unacceptable.

“It’s absolutely disrespectful.”

Another reader sallyw posted a message at 9.10pm on Sunday, May 21.

She said: “Maybe there needs to be some sort of fencing around it, even if it was just some small bollards and chains, to stop these ignorant, disrespectful, self-important morons from being able to do this.”

Cllr Roger Jeavons, cabinet member for Streetscene, reiterated what he had said previously.

He said: “I will ask officers to look at whether anything can be done to protect the memorial but it would be sad to have to do anything which might restrict those who wish to pay their respects because of the actions of a selfish minority.”

Ian Roberts, who is police sergeant for Newport, said: “Parking of this nature is not only illegal but completely disrespectful.

“Parking in the city centre is something my officers are working on every day to educate people about where they can park legally but also to give out fines when necessary.

“We’re working with Newport City Council to work on longer term measures to combat illegal parking and our officers have incorporated this into their patrol plan.

“To make it clear, there is plenty of parking available where drivers can park safely and legally in the city centre and anyone parking illegally should expect a fine.”
