FAMILIES have been informed about changes to a controversial policy which required them to remove precious ornaments from the graves of their loved ones.
Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) has sent letters to inform families about the policy change, which will allow moveable items such as pots, vases and ornaments to be placed along the grave space and not just at the top, as was the previous case.
The change has come into effect at cemeteries in Llanfoist, Llanelly, Bulwark and Osbaston.
Dozens of families at Llanfoist Cemetery, Abergavenny, were angered when they were told to remove items, leading to a petition being set up against the move. More than 300 people signed the petition, leading to the council announcing a u-turn over the policy.
A letter sent out to families explaining the policy change stated: “The council welcomes the views of each resident and fully considers all responses and as such, a decision has been made to allow certain items to be placed on grave spaces.”
Under the new rules, the council will no longer maintain the graves.
“The ERB holder will be responsible for the maintenance of the grave and the grass cutting,” the letter states.
But if the grave is neglected, the council reserves the right to move items to the head of the grave and recommence its upkeep. Unsuitable or disrespectful items can also be removed.
