THE number of people arrested in connection with a major drugs operation in Newport has risen to 30.

A total of 29 defendants have been charged with possession with intent to supply Class A drugs as part of Operation Jewel.

The majority of those arrested are due to appear before Newport Crown Court on June 9.

On Thursday May 26, two teenage boys - aged 15 and 16 - have received 12-month referral orders which will involve a 30-day curfew, community work and attending Youth Offending Service sessions.

Two other teenage boys, aged 16 and 13, have been charged and bailed to Cwmbran Youth Court for sentencing.

A 46-year-old man has been arrested, charged and remanded until June 8.

A 19-year-old man has been charged and bailed while a 39-year-old man has been given a Supervision Order until August 8 after appearing in court.

A 24-year-old man who originally received no further action relating to the offence has been rearrested and has been remanded until June 8.

Two men, aged 18 and 24, have been reported for summons at Newport Magistrates.
