CHLOE Thomas has a prized Olympic medal in her sights after hitting the ground running at the GB Boxing set-up in Sheffield.

Torfaen Warriors ABC star Thomas is the only Welsh member of a 10-strong female development squad which meets four days a week.

The Port Talbot resident, who is coached by Simon Weaver at the Cwmbran-based Warriors when back home, still can’t believe she is training alongside some of the UK’s top amateurs.

And, while it may be three years away, the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo are very much the focus for the 25-year-old.

Speaking about being in Yorkshire and her aims for the future, Thomas, a three-time national champion, said: “It’s awesome in Sheffield, I still don’t think it has sunk in that I’m here.

“It’s so well organised and I love the training and pushing my body to the next level.

“It’s all going well, the training is intense, but that’s what I need.

“I also met Anthony Joshua up here and that was very surreal, but he is a really humble guy.”

She continued: “Obviously there are more women turning professional and that has come into my head.

“But I started quite late in the amateurs and I want to see how well I can do here.

“I would love to go to the Olympics and win a medal, that’s my aim.”

Since beating Tamlyn Williams to the Welsh title in April, Thomas has decided to move down to 54kg for the upcoming Haringey Box Cup.

Thomas won gold at the same competition last year and will return later this month to try and claim another top prize.

Warriors coach Weaver is set to be in Thomas’ corner once more, and the boxer has nothing but praise for the man who has been there since her first fight.

“He is amazing,” she said. “Simon took me for my first fight in Jersey, although I was with a gym in Swansea at the time.

“I had a couple more fights while I was there and then moved to Simon’s gym in Cwmbran, and I’ve been there ever since.”

Meanwhile, Newbridge’s former Commonwealth champion Bradley Pryce faces unbeaten Scot Kieran Smith in Scotland tomorrow night.

The 36-year-old Pryce meets Smith in an eight-round super-welterweight contest at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley.
