TODAY we are reporting on the parade in Newport which saw veterans taking part in a dignified tribute to the memory of the D-Day landings.

Fitting perhaps, then to return to the issue of the problems being caused by city centre motorists parking practically on top of the permanent memorial to the same event.

Many readers expressed anger and disgust after when we featured pictures of cars last month which were parked so close to the memorial they were actually on top of poppy wreaths.

But despite the outrage, it is still going on.

And understandably there are now calls for railings or bollards to be erected around the memorial.

Newport city council says it is going to try to work with organisers of the D-Day Parade and others to see if there is a solution which does not close off the memorial to those who wish to pay their respects there but does deter the disrespectful and inconsiderate motorists from using it as a parking space.

We can understand that view.

But it is quite unbelievable to think that we have to put up a barrier in order to stop people parking on top of a memorial to an event which looms so large in our history.
