WE APPLAUD the announcement by the Welsh Assembly Government to launch a practical response in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire.

Instead of waiting for the outcome of any inquiries in Lon don in the wake of a tragedy which has left at least 79 people dead, the Assembly is to set up its own forum to investigate the issues.

The aim is simple, to ensure there is no similar tragedy here in Wales.

Experts from the fire service and those involved with social housing in Wales will be working to try to understand what went so horrifically wrong in London and to try to prevent it happening here.

Communities minister Carl Sargent says the issue will be approached thoroughly and comprehensively, and that any lessons learned will be acted upon. And in our view that is the key.

While the reasons for the London fire will undoubtedly prove complex, if the group in Wales finds action is needed here, then the onus will be on the Assembly to make sure any recommendations are followed to the letter.

Wales has its fair share of tower blocks. The safety of those living in them is paramount.
